GEOLEUM

Our oil by-product, or geoleum, is a promising renewable source of fuel and chemical feedstock.

The composition of geoleum is similar to that of petroleum, but differences arise given the variable nature of the materials from which it is produced. While it burns hot and clean, such as refined petroleum products, it also contains a number of valuable chemicals, which may be isolated and purified for significant economic value.

As Geochar grows as a business, we plan to invest significantly into determining methods to optimise our utilisation of our geoleum we produce. In the meantime, it can serve as a potent fuel source, capable of replacing petroleum in many instances.

Two Stories

Fresh geoleum (shown right) contains both an organic hydrocarbon-rich portion, and an aqueous water-rich portion. The hydrocarbons on top are highly calorific, while the water below contains a number of interesting chemicals.

The top layer is a potent fuel, and also contains a large number of useful aromatics (20-30% by weight), and the bottom layer contains a lower proportion of aromatics (5-10%) and acidic hydrocarbons, serving as a separate value stream.
